Money Talks
Do you listen?

The phrase “Money Talks” is pretty common in our society. ACDC the famous rock band from the seventies wrote a song Money Talks, there was a movie that was produced in 1997 with the title Money Talks, a book entitled Money Talks: How to Make a Million as a Speaker, as well as a top rated Canadian business show with the keyword title. And according to the Oxford English Dictionary the first use of the expression “money talks” was in the Saturday Evening Post in 1903. Since then, according to the Dictionary of American Slang, whenever people use that expression what they are really saying is that wealth is power and money buys everything. Does money really talk? Do you listen? What should you do with what it’s saying?

First a little history of money. As we know it has several different associated meanings for example: cash, dough, greenbacks, coins, currency, change, dinero, bucks and the list could continue for many lines but you get the idea. Money was invented many years ago as a form of currency to purchase goods and services. Today money is moving away from the physical form of currency to an electronic form of currency. With the development of credit cards, debit cards, online checking and bill paying, many see very little use for the actual paper and metal money.

Regardless of the form of money we are here to decide if money talks. Talk is a synonym for communicate so we can assume that if money can talk it can communicate, right? Communication requires talking and listening so do we communicate with money? Does money listen to what we tell it to do? Sure, how does money get from point A to point B? Money doesn’t simply get up and move by itself (yes it can talk and listen but it can’t walk). When we pay our bills we tell our money where to go, when we buy fund our 401k and retirement funds we are telling our money what to do. Buy a new car and you are telling your money you really don’t care about it but it will listen and go where you tell it. How you communicate with your money tells a lot about your personal finance, money management and wealth management. Learn how to talk to your money and tell it what you want it to do and you will be more financially successful.

Now once again back to the original question, does money talk? Yes, I think money talks quite a bit. Of course it doesn’t literally talk but figuratively it tells us a lot about ourselves including: our spending habits, our saving habits, our lifestyle, our heritage, our financial success, our management skills, responsibleness, and our ability to set goals. You don’t have to have a lot of money for it to tell you about these topics you have to manage what you’ve got.

When money talks you better listen. When money tells you funds are running low you had better start managing your personal finance better. Create a budget and tell money where to go don’t let spending habits get out of control, keep a tracking device on your money and know where he is at all the time. If you are fortunate enough to have a surplus of money listen to every dollar and put each dollar into a budget that serves a financial purpose.

Good communication with your money will lead to successful financial management and wealth management. You will greatly improve your personal finance skills, budgeting skills and debt management skills. Listen to the Money Talk and your personal finances will thank you!
